Jim Markwood has extensive experience working with corporations, partnerships, entrepreneurs, and private equity clients to solve tax issues and structure transactions efficiently. He advises on tax and structuring matters involving corporate, partnership, and cross-border transactions, and also reviews and assists in drafting transaction documents.
His client experience spans a wide range of industries, including start-up businesses, government contractors, aerospace and defense companies, and cryptocurrency businesses. Jim is particularly valued for delivering tax guidance that aligns with transaction structure and broader business objectives.
Jim also has deep expertise regarding the taxation of cryptocurrency transactions. He has contributed articles to Coinbase magazine addressing tax aspects of digital asset transactions, including hard forks and crypto-to-crypto “like-kind” exchanges, and regularly counsels Cogent clients on the tax aspects of I.C.O. transactions and structuring crypto businesses to achieve favorable tax treatment.
Prior to joining Cogent, Jim worked for two large Washington, DC law firms and a Big Four accounting firm. He graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law and, before attending law school, served for several years as a Legislative Assistant at the U.S. House of Representatives.
